2022.01.17 13:07 Valuable-Presence-41 Hermione is Autistic

I’ve been working on a long piece about what would have happened if Hermione had been in Slytherin. I want to publish it some time next week, but there’s a lot of background work involved—specifically, tracing her story through the seven Potter books. For now I want to share something that’s struck me on rereading them. I think Hermione Granger is autistic, and while I wouldn’t claim that’s the one viable reading, I’d like to talk about my reasons. (There are lots.)
In a post on their blog, Tumblr user Lupinatic writes about Hermione’s first scene aboard the Hogwarts Express.

She opens the door and asks if Ron and Harry have seen Neville’s toad, without knocking or saying ‘excuse me’ first. She sees Ron’s wand out and demands (not asks) to see him perform magic (‘Let’s see it then’). When Ron’s spell fails, she boasts of having done simple spells for practice and basically infodumps before she finally bothers to introduce herself. Once Harry introduces himself, she tells him she knows all about him (which is an alarming thing to say to someone you’ve never met) and expresses distinct surprise that he didn’t respond to his fame the way she would have.
As the author goes on to say, Hermione ‘is patronising, dismissive and bossy’ in this scene—‘and yet she is trying to help’. When she goes on about how much she’s read and about Hogwarts and its house system, it’s because she’s trying to socialise; when she tells Ron he has dirt on his nose, she assumes he’ll be glad to know. Later, when she tries to correct his hover charm, I get the sense she means to be helpful. Hermione first comes across—to me, at least—as kind but oblivious to unspoken social rules.
Once she, Harry and Ron are friends, this seems to change; I have a theory about why. After the troll attack in Philosopher’s Stone, the narrator states ‘There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other’, presenting their friendship as something unavoidable. I imagine Hermione going through primary school the way I did, praised for her work but never mixing well with her peers: in my reading, Harry and Ron are her first friends, and time spent with them helps her pick things up.
Throughout the books—here, again, I relate—Hermione puts her hand up in class whenever she knows anything, and Prisoner of Azkaban tells us her worst fear is academic failure. Often this is played as a joke:
‘What would [Lupin’s boggart] have been for you?’ said Ron, sniggering. ‘A piece of homework that only got nine out of ten?’
But what if Hermione is a teacher’s pet because she needs to be—because earning teachers’ approval academically is easier than earning peers’ approval socially? What if Hermione had a difficult time in muggle school, with children ostracising her and staff suggesting she might do better elsewhere? As Alyssa Hillary writes, the scene where Hermione worries about being ‘killed, or worse, expelled’ plays differently if she’s been unwelcome at other schools, and if she thinks Hogwarts is her last shot.
Hermione consistently does Harry and Ron’s work, scholastically as well as more broadly. In Chamber of Secrets, she brews a potion so they can interrogate Malfoy; in Goblet of Fire, she teaches Harry the summoning charm; in Deathly Hallows, she packs Harry’s possessions and bothers to learn protective magic to keep them safe. The fact her contributions are so often overlooked is sometimes criticised—but what if Hermione is keen to assume this role because it’s one way she can perform socially?
Hermione is bossy and pedantic early on, telling Ron how to say leviosa; I know autistic people who got fussy about grammar because they had to work at being verbal. Hillary asks us to picture Hermione at a younger age: ‘Her pronunciation is off in ways that get her sent off to speech therapy … because it’s so hard to get her mouth to move in those ways. Once she learns, though, she hasn’t got any patience for the people who didn’t have to work like she did, and get it wrong because they just don’t care.’
When I tell people my Hermione is autistic, one of the common responses is that in later books, she seems too socially and emotionally skilled to qualify. I have a few problems with that, and all of them are well conveyed by glancing at one of the most obvious examples. In Order of the Phoenix, when Harry doesn’t know why Cho was crying when she kissed him, Hermione looks up ‘with an almost pitying expression’, sighing and laying down her quill, then delivers this monologue.
‘Well, obviously, she’s feeling very sad, because of Cedric dying. Then I expect she’s feeling confused because she liked Cedric and now she likes Harry, and she can’t work out who she likes best. Then she’ll be feeling guilty, thinking it’s an insult to Cedric’s memory to be kissing Harry at all, and she’ll be worrying about what everyone else might say about her if she starts going out with Harry. And she probably can’t work out what her feelings toward Harry are anyway, because he was the one who was with Cedric when Cedric died, so that’s all very mixed up and painful. Oh, and she’s afraid she’s going to be thrown off the Ravenclaw Quidditch team because she’s been flying so badly.’
When I read this, I hear the voice of someone who thinks about how people feel in the same way I do: by looking consciously at the facts from their point of view and thinking of possible responses. Plenty of autistic people have advanced social skills—the ones I know include therapists and people who perform funerals—and frequently this is what they look like. Why does Hermione sigh at Harry, telling Ron ‘nastily’ that he hasn’t much emotional range? Because, again, she’s had to work at learning to do this.
That dovetails with something else that jumps out at me: Hermione is someone who thinks systematically instead of intuitively. (As she puts it in the first Deathly Hallows film: ‘I’m highly logical, which allows me to look past extraneous detail and perceive clearly that which others overlook.’) While most people need teachers to explain and demonstrate, Hermione learns on a theoretical level—most of the time, she only needs to read about a spell to perform it—and this too is familiar.
Then there’s her memory. Once she’s read something in a book, Hermione knows it permanently: when she arrives in her first year after diving into the reading list, she seems to have internalised most spells without much effort already, and it’s a running joke that she knows Hogwarts: A History well enough to be a stand-in for the book. When answering in class, she often recites passages from textbooks word for word, and in fourth year she quotes verbatim a year-old comment of Dumbledore’s.
With a few exceptions, Hermione appears adept at virtually all branches of witchcraft, with encyclopaedic knowledge of magical history and culture. She doesn’t just know lots of facts: she has a systematic grasp of the whole thing, knowing how it works the same way a scientist knows an ecosystem. Learning about it is how she unwinds in her free time, despite her peers not understanding. (Remember Ron’s reaction to her choice of ‘light reading’?) I think the wizarding world is Hermione’s special interest.
When something strikes her as illogical—when Trelawney’s beliefs seem like hokum, when the house elves don’t feel how she expects, when Umbridge doesn’t teach spellwork or Xenophilius asks her to prove the hallows aren’t real—Hermione feels personally affronted and angry. She systematises the world to help make sense of it, and when other people’s ideas cast doubt on her system, she tells them why they’re wrong instead of revisiting it—sometimes rightly and often not, but always indignantly.
Finally there are the sensory clues. In Philosopher’s Stone, after the trio have escaped Fluffy, Ron asks what a three headed dog is doing in a school.
Hermione had got both her breath and her bad temper back again. ‘You don’t use your eyes, any of you, do you?’ she snapped. ‘Didn’t you see what it was standing on?’ ‘The floor?’ Harry suggested. ‘I wasn’t looking at its feet, I was too busy with its heads.’
Hermione spots visual details others miss—and notice how annoyed she is that they don’t perceive things the way she does. Grammatically, ‘any of you’ refers to three people at minimum. Hermione isn’t just complaining about Harry and Ron: she’s saying her peer group in general don’t seem to use their eyes. Later, in Half-Blood Prince, Slughorn asks her to explain how she recognises amortentia, and Hermione gives a memorable reply.
‘You recognised it, I suppose, by its distinctive mother-of-pearl sheen?’ ‘And the steam rising in characteristic spirals,’ said Hermione enthusiastically, ‘and it’s supposed to smell differently to each of us according to what attracts us, and I can smell freshly mown grass and new parchment and—’
Notice the enthusiasm, the urgent and-and-and; notice how intensely she seems to experience aromas; notice the borderline-overwhelmed tone.
Even Hermione’s bushy hair feels autistic to me. Maybe she has trouble with how brushing it feels, or likes the way its weight feels on her scalp; maybe she finds the texture soothing or having it round her ears helps filter out unwanted noise, or maybe she’s oblivious to unspoken rules about appearance. At the Yule Ball, she ties her hair ‘in an elegant knot’: when Hermione decides to glam up, it’s still complex and theoretical, and she’s taught herself to do it the same way she teaches herself spells.
Again: you don’t have to read Hermione the way I do. But every time I revisit the books, another thing jumps out at me. There are other characters in fiction I have this headcanon about—Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Wolfgang Bogdanov in Sense8, Dirk Gently in the Netflix show—but Hermione is the one I keep coming back to. The more I think about her storyline, the more of it I recognise, and while that’s not the only interpretation of her, it’s one I’m getting attached to.

2022.01.17 13:07 Vagabond6161 29 M from Germany looking for a good time!

Hi there!
My name is Robin, I live in Germany and work in sales and marketing. Sounds boring? It is! That's why I try to upgrade my free time as good as possible: I do a lot of sports, love cooking and also do a good amount of outdoor stuff. My favorite is fishing for sure, but I also enjoy a good hike or just catching the first sunlight after a grey long German winter.
I would say that I am a very open minded person who enjoys life with all its up and downs. I really believe in dualism without getting too spiritual about it. I just take life as it is and try to make the best of it!
Enough about me for now. What about you? I would love to hear from you!

2022.01.17 13:07 Wise_Ad8479 Voltage overclock for GPUs

Well I own a rx550 2gb which particularly isn't an enthusiast card by any means but I have been trying to learn to overclock my gpu to get a bit more fps. I kind of hit a barrier when my gpu had low enough temperatures that it wasn't throttling but with the overclocks it would crash. I think low voltage is the problem, so should try to get into voltage tweeking and if yes how is safe way to start it

2022.01.17 13:07 bedmed8 I relapsed :(

I started binge eating when I got to college, but I was able to stop bingeing while I was home for Winter break (even lost several pounds!). Last night I had my second binge after coming back to school this week. I really hope I can break this pattern again. I hope I can stay on the winning streak I’ve been on. Feeling good for tonight though, promised myself I’m not gonna binge🤞

2022.01.17 13:07 Cyber_Mk Our experience and a question

My family and I, we jut had covid, we have a baby as well.
The first to show symptoms was my wife. After 4 days the LO showed symptoms and next say myself. We are both vaccinated and we were about to get the booster.
Symptoms timeline was like this:itchiness in through and nose like before a cold, fever (high for my wife and baby, mild for me) a general feeling of unwell and tiredness, coughing that progressively turned juicier. All this lasted about 4 days, with coughing persisting for another 2 days(6 in total of our 10 day quarantine)
Don't need to tell you the scariest part was having a baby infected, thankfully we all got through it.
All we took was paracetamol and panadol babys for the LO. + honey+propolis+Royal jelly bc i have acces to a beekeper friend (just the adults of course)
My question is, my wife and little ones cought returned, no other symptoms, 3 days after it stopped(on the 9th day) . Is it normal? Has anyone experienced something like this? Thank you
